2013 New York City Championship

Last Friday we competed in the 2013 New York City FTC Championship, which was part of the the 13th Anniversary New York City FIRST Mega-Celebration of Science and Technology at the Javits Center. They really do mean “Mega”: 65 FRC teams, 72 FTC teams, 80 FLL teams and 20 Jr. FLL teams all under the same roof.

We almost didn’t make it when our bus was cancelled due to a snow storm, but everyone was able to get there eventually. We ended up seeded only 22nd after qualifiers, but during alliance selection we were Second Pick for the First Alliance in the Gotham City Division joining 4017 RoboPandas (Captain) and 5477 Innovo (First Pick). This was the exact same alliance we had last year when we were Fourth Alliance Captain! Our alliance won the division, and went on to become the Winning Alliance for the tournament! We also won the PTC Design Award, which is a great honor for us since PTC is our sponsor!

We’ll be rooting for RoboPandas at Worlds – they said they plan to put Innovo’s and our logos on their robot as good luck charms!

It was a long, crazy day, but we had a lot of fun. Our thanks to NYC FIRST and all the volunteers, judges, referees, and FTAs for putting on a great tournament.

Here’s a video of our day at the tournament:

NYC FIRST is starting to put up a playlist of videos (we were there on Day 2):

Here we are at our judging interview:

NYC FIRST posted this video of the deciding match for the tournament title. Our video above shows a little bit of this match, but this video has a better angle. You can see how Innovo single-handedly saved our alliance by scoring in autonomous and then defending against two opponents after RoboPandas tipped over during teleop:
