Today we spent our day off (
celebrating not having to go to Freshman Orientation) visiting Stewart ANGB to tour Boeing. It was an incredible experience, to say the least.
We begun the day with a tour on the C-17 Globemaster III, which we later learned was called “The Moose.” The team split up taking turns in the cockpit and on the ground to see what the ailerons and other flaps looked like when moved. We also got to see the different ways the floor could be modified as to control the cargo.
Then we took a lunch break and talked more about all the college and career paths to be taken. It was interesting to hear each host’s different journey to where they are now. At lunch, we also got a nice diagram of the plane that we plan to display in our competition pit throughout the next season. Additionally, every member got a little moose, which we all certainly appreciated. 🙂
After that, we got to see where custom parts were fabricated. We saw the CAD files for a replacement part that would be made. Then we saw a water cutter in action. They had mapped out our logo and cut it into metal for us!
Finally, we got to see where non destructive testing was done. It turns out ultrasonic equipment is used to check for internal damage to pieces. Autonomous mode distance detection just got more interesting!
All in all, we had a wonderful day. We thank everyone for so graciously hosting while going to no end to make us feel welcome and informed.
